Broken Arrow Athletic Department

Cheer Program

Broken Arrow Public Schools has a truly amazing cheer program - having won four straight (2013-2015) large Co-Ed State Championships. BAPS Cheer has a long tradition in Broken Arrow. Many of the current cheer coaches were past BAPS cheerleaders, including Coach Amy Howe. Melenda Knight, assistant athletic director, was part of the first cheer group to travel to a national competition in Dallas in 1986-1987. BAPS Cheer has won many national championships since that time. In 2010, the Cheer program moved under the umbrella of the Athletics Department.

The BAPS Cheer program currently has seven teams. These teams consists of the following:

2 - 8th grade teams (North MS and South MS)
1 - 9th grade team (Freshman Academy)
1 - 8th and 9th Competitive Team
1 – Junior Varsity (JV) Team
1 – Varsity Team

The Cheer teams are always on the move during the sports seasons. Varsity can expect to travel to every game while lower grades will be at all home game and some away games. They will also be busy year round, with summer camps and competitions in the fall as well as nationals in January or February for some of the teams.

In order to participate in the BAPS Cheer program, athletes are required to try-out. All students in 8th grade and up are eligible to tryout for the BAPS Cheer program.

Middle school cheer teams practice 2-3 times a week at their respective sites with Competitive Cheer practicing at the High School. High School cheer can be a 1st or 6th hour course depending on the team and practice will normally run after school hours.

Only physicals dated after May 1 of the current school year will be accepted for tryouts and will be valid through the end of the following school year.
